New day in Las Vegas

It’s just after dawn here in Las Vegas. I’ve been awake for an hour or so, and I’m working on my second cup of shitty in-room coffee. Our room at the Orleans has a view of the Strip. Since we’re west of the Strip, I’ve been watching the sun rise over Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and the McCarran airport.

I tried taking some photos, but most of the look shifted because of the double-paned glass. I’ve attached the least terrible picture, taken from my phone.

We made excellent time getting here yesterday evening. With the time zones working in our favor, we arrived around 6:30. We decided to head a half-hour north to the Aliante Station casino for dinner. We have a high school classmate who’s a dealer there, and we were hoping to catch up with her on her break. It didn’t work out, but we did surreptitiously watch her work for a few minutes. Interrupting a working dealer would not be wise.

At the casino, we had dinner at a supposedly Italian restaurant called Pasta Cucina. I’ve never eaten there before, but it seems like a chain of some kind. Think of Olive Garden’s food, but with the decor of a so-called “modern Italian” restaurant and Chili’s prices.

Put another way, it filled the gap without emptying our wallets. That’s about the best I can say about it. Our meal was indeed food, in at least some academic sense of the word.
