A one-day road trip to the Cannes Film Festival

Back in the spring of 2003, I took a day trip to Cannes during its famous annual film festival. It was the last day of the festival, and most of the Hollywood celebrities had already come and gone. However, watching the European celebrities arrive for the final screening was no less glamorous.

Pay close attention to the security detail. They were actually officers of the elite CRS, a special unit of the French national police, in formal uniforms. Clearly no expense was spared to keep us riffraff away from the celebrities. The CRS has a badass reputation, but at least one of the officers took some time to chat with those of us on the other side of the barrier.

I was a little disappointed to have missed Clint Eastwood and Laura Linney. They were in town earlier in the week when Mystic River was screened. There were stands all over the waterfront area where one could buy photographs of movie stars who appeared during the festival, including Eastwood and Linney. I can’t remember if I bought one. If I did, I have certainly misplaced it. Or lost it in the divorce.

Looking at this photo now and seeing that it was dark in May, I realize it must have been relatively late in the evening already. I find it hard to believe I drove from Cannes back to Montpellier the same evening. It must have been awfully late when I got home. I probably sucked down a lot of rest area vending machine coffee along the way. It’s not as bad as it sounds.
