Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá

The Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was the first official stop on our 2012 California Missions road trip. It was the only mission of our first day, a Saturday.

Façade

It was a gorgeous day in San Diego. The blue sky was spectacular behind the white façade of the present basilica.

Basilica

The church is still quite active. Organizers were setting up for a wedding when we were there. At the same time, a detached chapel was being used for a baptism.

Grounds

The mission grounds were beautiful. This pietà, the thirteenth of the Stations of the Cross, stood out among the works of art.

Founder

Of course there was a statue of Fr. Junipero Serra, who founded the California Missions. It was the first of many sightings of this same image of Fr. Serra.
