Monday night I was able to relive my teenage years at the Guns ‘n Roses concert at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. What a great show!
The band took the stage at 9:45 pm, about 20 minutes after their scheduled 9:25 pm start, but since they’re so notorious for starting hours late, it was essentially on time. They played almost without a break until the encore ended at 12:25 am. What can I say about the show? Imagine a guy who was one of the most inspired guitar players on the planet back in 1987 and give him another almost thirty years of practice. That was Slash. Axl needed some help from backup vocalists from time to time during the middle of songs but managed to save enough of his voice to crush the endings. The band performed all their hits, plus a mix of other tracks from their albums — including Rocket Queen and Coma, which are among my favorites — and a handful of covers. The pleasant surprise of the evening was Estranged, which has ruined the album version for me forever. Long story short, was it worth staying up five hours past my bedtime on a weeknight? Totally.
