Taking a break for Café Bustelo at Gila Blend inside a casino

The play on words on this Café Bustelo sign — assuming it was intentional — might not be so obvious if you haven’t spent much time in Arizona. Gila Bend is a small town in Maricopa County, located near a bend in the Gila River, about an hour’s drive from Phoenix.

Cafe Bustelo, Gila Blend

However, it wasn’t the playful name that lured us into this snack bar at the Quechan Casino, a few miles from Yuma, across the state line in California. It was the branding. Café Bustelo happens to be the espresso grind Kathryn and I usually buy for use at home. However, this was only the second time, I think, I’ve ever seen it featured at a coffee shop.

Although you can’t see it from the photo, the Café Bustelo logo was quite obviously glued over a Starbucks logo, which I found particularly amusing. The bright yellow espresso machine looked brand new, so I suspect the change was recent.

It was probably one of the best coffees I’ve ever had in a casino. Admittedly, that’s not a high bar.
