Counting down the hours in Mexico City

It’s hard to believe, but by the time I publish this post, I’ll have about 72 hours remaining in Mexico City. The time really flew by.

As much as I’ve enjoyed my time here, I can’t wait to see Kathryn again. She was visiting her father when I left for Mexico City almost four weeks ago, so the time apart from her was made that much longer. I miss her more than words can say.

Honestly, these city name cutout things have become cliché. At least this one doesn’t include a pound sign.

As for the reason I’m in Mexico City, I feel as though I’ve learned a lot of Spanish here, but that I have so much more left to learn. In this age of instant gratification and unlimited information, I have to remind myself I didn’t learn English in four weeks, nor French, nor German — and frankly, at this point, I probably already speak Spanish better than German. However, I do now have a much more solid foundation in Spanish than I had a month ago — a foundation on which I can continue to build.

Among all the languages that aren’t English, Spanish is the one with the greatest opportunity for practice for someone living in Phoenix — or anywhere else in the United States, for that matter. Indeed, on a recent trip to the small Massachusetts city where I was born, I was surprised to see Spanish on items in the bakery section of a local supermarket. When I was a boy, if a product was marked in any language other than English, it was French for the benefit of vacationers from Quebec. Times have changed.

As for my remaining time here, it would be tempting to try to cram in as many cultural activities as I can, as if I were visiting Mexico City for a long weekend. However, I still have 12 hours of classes remaining, and they can be quite exhausting. I already have plans to have dinner Thursday with one of my housemates. Friday will be an early night due to the pre-dawn flight on Saturday. That really just leaves today and tomorrow afternoon to see the rest of the most populous city in North America.

I may just have to come back to finish it all.
