Yesterday afternoon, we were able to get to the airport, return the rental car, drop our bags, and get through the security checkpoint with plenty of time for lunch. We ate at Wahlburgers, which, after two enjoyable meals at their Las Vegas location, was a bit of a disappointment. Okay food, but indifferent service. At … Continue reading Back to the grind
Today is another travel day for Kathryn and me as we fly back to Phoenix after roughly six days in Massachusetts. We’ve almost finished packing, and we’re heading for the airport in about an hour, first returning the rental car, and, with a bit of luck, perhaps leaving enough time for something to eat before … Continue reading Heading home from Massachusetts today
On the way to the airport this afternoon, Kathryn, swelling with pride in the place she’s called home for over 25 years, told me what a great airport Phoenix Sky Harbor has become. I really found it hard to disagree with her. One of the reasons I was comfortable arriving so early for my flight … Continue reading Phoenix Sky Harbor is a great airport, especially if you’re hungry
This is the point in my travels where I usually go on a rant about the TSA. Today, I can’t. Every TSA agent I interacted with today was pleasant, courteous, and professional. I’ve heard and read a number of horror stories about checking in firearms at the airport, concerning both the airlines and TSA. This … Continue reading My customary airport rant has been canceled for lack of outrage
If it seems like it was just last week I got home from two weeks of vacationing abroad, it’s because it was just last week. Since then I’ve already been back to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport twice. Once was to drop Kathryn off for her last-minute emergency trip back to Massachusetts, roughly 24 hours after … Continue reading Just got home, leaving again
We’re finally home from Montpellier, back in Phoenix. I spent most of the past 24 hours wedged into middle seats on airliners, so I’m now rewarding myself with one or more cold beers, in my kitchen, in my underwear. It’s good to be home. A young woman from our parish, whom we met during our … Continue reading After a long, miserable day of travel, we’re finally home from Montpellier
I was doing so well at publishing a blog post at least once a day, and then when we got back from Lourdes it kind of fizzled out. Well, have no fear, we’re doing well here in Montpellier. Yesterday I finally posted about our road trip to Sommières, which happened last Thursday. Last Friday we … Continue reading I’m way behind on my posts, so here’s a brief status update from Montpellier
Kathryn and I just got back to Montpellier after a whirlwind 30-hour side trip to Lourdes. This is just a quick update because the last two days have been somewhat exhausting. I’m really happy we didn’t do this as a day trip as we’d originally planned. Four hours driving a rental car I’m not familiar … Continue reading We’re back in Montpellier after a whirlwind side trip to Lourdes
This is going to be brief, since we’re heading out in a few minutes to join a friend who gives tours of Montpellier, and then probably out for a few drinks with him after that. We’ve moved up our planned side trip to Lourdes. We originally planned to go next Saturday for just the day. … Continue reading Just a quick status update and a change of plans
We enjoyed a bit more sleep on our flight from Paris to Montpellier, but since we were only in the air just over an hour, there’s not much else to say. By the time we collected our bags, we had missed a shuttle bus to the city by about 15 minutes, so we had to … Continue reading Arrived safely at our apartment in Montpellier
I planned to write a brief status update as we took our seats on the flight from Detroit to Paris, but somehow we ended up in an AT&T dead zone, so I had no access to the internet. The flight was uneventful, other than a bit of turbulence leaving Detroit. Kathryn and I both got … Continue reading In Paris, waiting for our flight to Montpellier
If you’re reading this, we’ve safely landed in Detroit. I’ve never been to this airport before, but I hear it’s nice. I’ll report back when I’ve had a chance to look around. In the past, I’ve had a difficult time sleeping on airplanes. However, on the flight from Phoenix, I was asleep before we pushed … Continue reading Cookies and our breaking points
In fact, it’s already well after seven o’clock in Montpellier. Is it too early to reset my watch? The last time we were at Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport was the last time we flew to Montpellier, about 30 months ago. They were in the middle of extensive renovations then, and today we’re … Continue reading It’s five o’clock somewhere
Kathryn and I were up and at ’em early this morning to start our long trip from Phoenix to Montpellier, although compared to our normal weekday schedules, it was like we slept in. Even after a couple leisurely cups of coffee, we finished our last minute chores way ahead of schedule. We’ll leave for the … Continue reading Bags packed, ready to go
Today is Earth Day. I did not drive my car to work today. I did have a giant, diesel-guzzling truck tow my car to a nearby repair shop. And I did have someone drive me to work in his car. And one of my coworkers has offered to drive me home in his car. But … Continue reading I did not drive my car to work today
We’re home from Kentucky. With our luggage. And two Big Macs we found along the way. Kathryn’s shift begins in three hours. My schedule tomorrow is a bit more forgiving.
We made our connection in Chicago, but just by the skin of our teeth. We’ll stop sweating soon, I hope. The AA app says our bags reached Chicago, but nothing about whether they made the connection. I guess we’ll find out in Phoenix.
The flights today were largely uneventful, although I will say the American Airlines cabin crew from Philadelphia to Phoenix was one of the worst I’ve ever experienced. My sister and her husband gave us a ride home from the airport. As soon as we got inside the house, I realized we had no beer in … Continue reading And we’re home again
Kathryn and I are sitting at the airport in Manchester, New Hampshire. With the winter weather yesterday, I thought it would be a good idea to arrive extra early today. As a result, everything has gone super smoothly. The rental car drop-off took less than a minute, the airline check-in took less than three minutes, … Continue reading The voyage back to Phoenix is underway
We’re safely on the ground and having a light dinner in Seabrook, New Hampshire. No pictures since the mobile network is unreliable where we are.
Our flight to Charlotte arrived early, meaning we didn’t have to rush between gates on different concourses. We also had some time to check out the dining options, and for the first time in the United States, I saw a Brioche Dorée. The Brioche Dorée in Montpellier used to be my go-to for breakfast on … Continue reading Seeing a Brioche Dorée in Charlotte while awaiting flight to Manchester
It’s a little after 6 am, and we’ve already taken our seats aboard our flight from Phoenix to Charlotte. It’s been an uneventful morning so far. The security checkpoint was a breeze for once. It left us plenty of time for a coffee and a dry, overpriced blueberry muffin before boarding.
For better or worse, Kathryn and I are back home in Phoenix at the end of our three-day road trip to Las Vegas. Mostly we made good time today, but our travels were delayed somewhat by an In-N-Out Burger in Kingman and a Dairy Queen in Wickenburg.
Our Monday morning bureaucratic adventure in Las Vegas is complete. It took just over an hour, which wasn’t too bad. We’re mostly packed and ready to check out of the hotel and begin the drive back to Phoenix. If we’re lucky, we’ll get home before rush hour starts. In an earlier post, I mentioned having … Continue reading Leaving Las Vegas
After a surprisingly good night’s sleep in Las Vegas — I realize people seldom brag about how much sleep they got in Vegas, except perhaps to say they didn’t sleep at all — Kathryn and I have had one of those weird mornings where everything took fifteen minutes less time than we expected, and now … Continue reading Early breakfast to start a busy day in Las Vegas
